Together with Panoptiqm guys we did lately furry squirrel.
I was responsible for camera match moving, grooming and rendering fur which I did completely with standard maya fur and mental ray.
It took me some time to style it right because all aspects of direction and character is derived from maps without guide curves.
It is not clever idea to make fur that way ( I mean without curve styling hehe :) ) but it was good lesson of patience.
Squirrel fur is made from 3 fur systems (one for base look, second for some randomness and third for whiskers)
